The Verdon river cut 700 metres into Jurassic limestone at a rate of roughly one centimetre per century. The result is the Grand Canyon du Verdon, some 25 kilometres long and, at its narrowest, barely 6 metres wide at the water. Its colour is not a trick of the light.

Humans arrived long before the tour buses. The Grotte de la Baume Bonne, above the lower gorge, holds occupation layers reaching back some 400,000 years. Yet the canyon floor itself stayed largely unmapped until 1905, when speleologist Édouard-Alfred Martel descended it over three days with a rope team and a collapsible canvas boat. His account gave the gorge its name in the wider world. The path he traced is now the Sentier Martel, 15 kilometres of ladders and unlit tunnels. The modern landscape is partly engineered. In 1974 the Sainte-Croix dam closed, flooding the valley floor and drowning the village of Les Salles-sur-Verdon, which was rebuilt higher up. Lake Sainte-Croix, 2,200 hectares of it, is therefore younger than most visitors assume. The Parc naturel régional du Verdon followed in 1997, covering 180,000 hectares across 46 communes. Aiguines and Moustiers-Sainte-Marie anchor the two rims. Moustiers, clinging beneath a limestone notch, suspends a gilded star on a 227-metre chain strung between two cliffs — a votive gesture recorded since the Crusades and re-hung repeatedly, most recently after storm damage. The village gave its name to Moustiers faience, tin-glazed earthenware produced from the 1670s and exported across Europe. Aiguines, opposite, built its economy on boxwood turning; its château keeps four pepper-pot towers roofed in glazed tile.
The rim roads matter as much as the villages. The Route des Crêtes above La Palud-sur-Verdon runs a one-way loop past fourteen belvederes; the Corniche Sublime on the southern side reaches the Balcons de la Mescla, where the Artuby joins the Verdon 250 metres below. Griffon vultures, reintroduced from 1999, ride the thermals between them. This is why a verdon gorge day trip from nice remains a study in geology, not merely a photograph.
